Batteries are items of high use; they are portable and make it simple to provide energy to different appliances. However, once their lifetime has ended, batteries become a highly toxic waste due to the concentration of heavy metals in pure metal form and oxides released to the environment.
Important Information:
- Batteries contain dangerous components such as mercury, lead, sulfur, cadmium and some others, that after a chemical reaction produce electricity. Batteries have a protecting layer, if batteries are thrown away with some other kind of waste, their degradation can be accelerated due to the environment, the heat and fermentations, especially among organic waste.
- When the layer of a battery is degraded, it loses its capacity of protection and releases polluting elements to the environment, in water, air or land.
- Dangerous components of batteries such as mercury, sulfur and others are accumulated in the environment and then in the human body, causing damages to the brain tissues and nervous system. If they are released in nature, they will affect the fauna and flora.

| Ecological Tip: |
| |
- Avoid the use of batteries in simple appliances, like in toothbrush, using manually appliances, with plug connections or rechargeable.
- Be aware of the technologic advances, appliances are now more efficient and use alternative energy like solar energy or dynamos. More and more appliances have replaced the use of big batteries D for small AA and AAA with the same power.
- If the use of batteries is unavoidable, use rechargeable ones to substitute the use of an important amount of common and alkaline batteries.
- When throwing batteries put them apart from other waste, and take them to special places where they can be properly treated.
